It is legal to hire a person for small repair jobs even if he/she does not have a contractor's license, as long as the job does not exceed the total amount of $500.00 and the person/business you hire discloses the fact of not being licensed by the Contractors License Board before performing the work.

YOUR ONLY REMEDY AGAINST AN UNLICENSED CONTRACTOR MAY BE IN CIVIL COURT, AND YOU MAY BE LIABLE FOR DAMAGES ARISING OUT OF ANY INJURIES TO THE CONTRACTOR OR HIS OR HER EMPLOYEES."
